Making sweet dreams, without the bedbug bites!
We’ve all wished after a terrible nightmare, that we could choose and create our own pleasant dreams. How nice would that be? Ok brain, I’d like to dream about eating a whole cheesecake without getting fat, while winning the gold medal in olympic gymnastics, please. It’s even more disheartening when it’s your little one suffering from a nightmare, but with this great app, your child can create and design some wacky dreams in a short story, with no nightmares (or daymares) in sight.
In My Dream gives kids the opportunity to design an illustration, portraying a silly dream, and conjure up a free-spirited story, telling the tale. In My Dream, by e-Toiles editions, is available in versions for the iPhone for $1.99, and the iPad for $4.99. The iPad version has added functions like unraveling the created picture, and it allows for saving images to the Gallery (I reviewed the iPad version). In My Dream is recommended for children ages 3 and up.

Open In My Dream, and tap on the star pull to raise a curtain on your dream. You’ll see images appear, looking as if they are being fast-forwarded on the screen, and land on an illustration, with corresponding text that explains the random illustration. Each illustration is divided into three segments: upper, middle, and lower. Your child will swipe each segment, to reveal a new image, that very cleverly, fits seamlessly into the other segments of the illustration. As you swipe each piece of the illustration, you’ll see the corresponding sentence that describes the part of the illustration, also get swiped with it, within the three-tiered lines of text below. Swipe the pieces of the illustration of all three segments til the desired illustration is accomplished, and read or listen to the narration of the short story the illustration has created. There are over 8,000 different combinations, for fun over and over again.
Tap on the moon icon at the bottom of the screen, and watch as the scene changes to night-time, with a few hidden surprises in the shadows. Tap on the camera icon to take a snapshot of your child’s created illustration, and it will be saved in the Gallery. The Gallery can be viewed by selecting the multiple squares icon next to the camera. Tap on the black voice-bubble to hear the narration of the created story.

I love how this app triggers creativity in a child; whether they delight in meshing a design that intriques their imagination, enjoy the silly phrases that would ordinarily never be uttered in a single statement, or just love how it all comes together. It’s kind of like family; a bunch of individual crazies, all strangely united.
I also love how In My Dream‘s music sounds fast-forwarded when the illustrations and text are being mixed up in the beginning. The artwork is very simple and childlike, but also very interesting and modern. I enjoy the nice British-accented narrator, that gives great character and charm to the odd stories.
In My Dream is a stimulating, creative-thinking app for young children, that helps them design a whimsical dreamlike illustration, while also initiating a mixed-up story, stemming from the illustrations. This is a simple and lovely app that has a lot to offer children in design and triggering creative writing.
