The adorable alien Boing has landed his spaceship on your iPad, and is here to take your kids on a chilly adventure to the Ice Land, and learn about letters, phonics, and words. iLearnWith Boing: Ice Land Adventures is a great beginner reader app, designed with fun, interactive literacy games for kids in preschool and kindergarten. iLearnWith Boing: Ice Land Adventures is available for the iPad for $2.99, and is recommended for children ages 3-6.
If you’ve read my previous iLearnWith Poko series, you can expect the same excellence and much more in this new series by TribalNova, complete with a new character, the alien Boing.
In iLearnWith Boing: Ice Land Adventures, your child will be challenged with literacy games and be rewarded with gifts of new games to play. I love how you can adjust the difficulty to suit your 3 year old, and the app grows with your child through kindergarten. All games are timed against the clock, so do as many as you can! After your child has completed several of the games, you mom, can check on their progress in the parents center, accessible from the home screen. In this section you will be able to see in what areas your child excels, and where he or she needs improvement, and it even has results from other apps in the iLearnWith Boing and Poko series. Also, when your child successfully completes a sequence of games, he or she will be awarded with gifts! After earning a gift, you’ll be prompted to visit Boing’s spaceship on the home screen, where your child can play with his or her gift.

iLearnWith Boing: Ice Land Adventures‘ animation, sound effects, and narration are tremendous! The app flows nicely from game to game, and I love how the characters are so interactive. Since most kids this age can’t read, I love how the characters speak the simple instructions, and your child can tap on Boing the alien to hear the instructions again.
Here’s how the app works:
Open the app and create an account for each of your kids, symbolized by an avatar they can choose for themselves. Here you can also adjust the difficulty to challenge your child at their level.

Next, get playing and learning! Choose between three different animal games to play:
Join the Polar Bears to learn letters. Select the bear that has the same letter on its ice cream cone, that matches the bubble at the bottom of the slide. Guide the polar bear down the slide with the letter bubble at the bottom, but don’t forget to snatch up extra scoops of ice cream on the way down! Once the polar bear is safely guided to the end of the slide, the bubble bursts, displays an image, and audibly says the word that starts with that letter. Your child can tap on the letters at any point in the game to hear it spoken aloud.

Visit the Penguins and have fun learning phonics. In this game, you can play with someone else, or on your own. In two player mode, you take turns trying to form syllables shown in your snowbank. Throw your snowball containing one letter or syllable of a word, and peg one of several ice skating penguins that has the correct letter on its hat that completes the phonic. The game works like a slingshot. The first player to complete all their phonics in their snow pile wins! Each player must take turns shooting off their snowballs. The game is the same concept for one player, but it’s just you against your opponent-the clock!
Lastly, play with the Seals to practice reading. A picture is presented and you must spell the word of the image. Put the hat-wearing seals in the water on a whale’s back one by one, so that the letters of their hats spell the word. When each seal is placed on the whale correctly, each letter(s)’ sound is made. When all the seals are in place, the word is sounded-out, and read.
